Independence Plus Second Generations

Second Generations

Second Generations is a supervised, community-based independent living program for young mothers (or fathers) with one child or pregnant clients in their third trimester.  Clients are referred by foster care units of local departments of social services.  They are between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one years, and each mother has one child between newborn up to age three at the time of admission. The program provides housing, case management, life skills training, and parenting skills training.  They are placed in two-bedroom apartments and provided with twenty-four hour staff supervision.  Infants and children over the age of six months have their own bedroom. Infants and children over the age of six months have their own bedroom.

Each client is assigned a Case Manager who is responsible for coordinating program activities.  A service agreement and a transition plan are executed between the client, New Pathways, and the placing agency representative.  The emphasis of the transition plan is placed on educational or vocational programs, employment, program rules, life skills preparation, and other therapeutic requirements.  Services are geared toward enabling youth to become self-sufficient, productive, and responsible adults.

The program is designed to be staff intensive to provide frequent contact and availability to the mothers and infants.  At least one Life Skills Counselor is on-duty at all times and is available by cell phone during scheduled work hours.  New Pathways has full- and part-time Life Skills Counselors to cover weekdays and weekends. The Life Skills Counselors are available for routine supervision, crisis response, milieu stabilization, and logistical support.  They provide recreation activities, teach various life skills, and provide transportation, if needed.

New Pathways employs a Director of Training and Vocational Services who assists clients with setting their educational, vocational and employment goals.  The Director also assesses vocational skills as needed.

A part-time Parenting Trainer is available to teach parenting skills. Second Generations has a full-time Program Director who is responsible for administrative duties and case management services.
